We, the unofficial members of the Ixecutive and Legisla-
tive Councils of Hongkong, have read with profound disappoint-
ment and much regret your telegram of the 1st December to His
Excellency the Governor, in which you state that "while I am
gratified by striking testi.ony to esteem in which you are
held in the Colony I regret I am not able to state definitely
what recommendations I shall be able to Lake to His Majesty
when your term of office comes to an end, but so far as I can

onise with arrangements in view with regard to Hongkong and
other colonies, Please inform unofficials accordingly,"
2. We at once took the liberty of forwarding to you through
Sir Paul Chater, our senior representative, the following tele-
gram: "With reference to your telegram of first December we
are sending letter giving reasons for our view that most essen-
tial in interests of Colony that present Governor's term be
extended.
Meanwhile we earnestly beg that definite arrange-
ments be postponed until our letter received and considered.
For all unofficial members of Councils. Chater, Senior,"

firmly convinced that an extension of Sir Edward Stubba' term
of office is most desirable and essential in the interests of
the Colony in order that a "ontinuity of policy may be secured
in matters of the first importance to Hongkong.
